Hamilton Pool Preserve

Swimming, hiking, photography, birdwatching, and nature study are just a few of the activities available at this breathtaking natural wonder in Dripping Springs. Formed when an underground river collapsed thousands of years ago, the grotto features a 50-foot waterfall spilling into a jade green pool. Reservations are required daily, and visitors must arrive at least an hour before their time slot ends.

Swimming is allowed when water quality permits, though access is sometimes restricted due to bacteria levels. While the trail beneath the overhanging cliff is closed for safety, visitors can still reach the water from the beach area. This spot is widely regarded as one of Texas’s most stunning natural features and top swimming holes.

Designated as a preserve by the Travis County Commissioner’s Court in 1990, Hamilton Pool Preserve is a historic swimming hole that became part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. The BCP encompasses more than 31,000 acres of endangered species habitat owned by Travis County, the City of Austin, The Nature Conservancy, the Lower Colorado River Authority, Travis Audubon Society, and private landowners, representing a regional effort to balance preservation with public access. Located three-quarters of a mile upstream from its confluence with the Pedernales River, Hamilton Creek creates this natural wonder as it spills over limestone outcroppings into the head of a steep box canyon. The preserve serves as home to a variety of native birds, fish, animals and plants, making it an important ecological sanctuary in the Texas Hill Country. Prior to the 19th century, the Tonkawa and Lipan Apaches lived in this area, adding historical significance to its natural beauty.

The preserve offers year-round programming including wildflower walks, birdwatching tours, and educational workshops. Photography enthusiasts will find countless opportunities to capture dramatic limestone formations, native plants, and crystal-clear spring waters that make this hidden gem one of the Hill Country’s most remarkable destinations.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and unique geological gem hidden in the Texas Hill Country, Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center inspires people to develop a lifelong practice of enjoying and protecting nature. Located adjacent to the Pedernales River in Southwest Travis County, this natural treasure has been preserved and offered to the public since 1976. The preserve features hiking trails (several ADA accessible), bird blinds, prairie restoration, rainwater ponds, butterfly gardens, and the award-winning Warren Skarren Environmental Learning Center.

Hiking, camping, rock climbing, birdwatching, and stargazing are just a few of the activities at this iconic Texas destination. The popular Summit Trail is a 1.5-mile round trip with views equivalent to climbing a 30- to 40-story building, offering breathtaking panoramas from the top. Guided tours are available on select Saturdays, with private group options year-round.
